Display Mirroring Option icon won't show on Menu Bar despite activation through System Preferences

Upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.1 on my MacBook Pro (mid-2009 model; 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) in early October and acquired the new Apple TV on its 2nd day of release 2 weeks ago. Love it. Am able to AirPlay from iPhone fine and Airplay audio from Safari...but it won't AirPlay video. For some reason, my Display Preference Menu Bar icon is refusing to display (when I click it off/on in System Preferences, it will momentarily flash appear and then disappear again). When in the Built-In Display System Preference window and hold down the Option button to "Detect Displays", nothing happens and I see no option to detect my Apple TV (hooked up to my Samsung Smart TV and sharing the same Internet/WiFi connections).

Question #1: How do I get my Monitor Display icon to remain visible on my Menu Bar (and why is it no longer remaining visible on its own)?

Question #2: How do I get my AirPlay to display video to my Apple TV (and why is only audio streaming through and not video as well)?

I am assuming this is because my MacBook Pro is from mid-2009; however, I am able to get it to display audio/video from my iTunes and audio sources throughout from various browsers and apps. Odd that it isn't allowing video throughout. I'll just use a third-party application for now until someone can offer a suggestion. Thanks.

Your machine is too old and doesn't support mirroring but it does support Airplay via iTunes.

Just click on the icon (looks like a TV) to change it to the Apple TV.

If your machine and Apple TV are on the same network your can use Home Sharing to display your photos, video and music.

Thanks, I had suspected this...just find it odd that it partially works. When I use AirParrot, it will occasionally display the AirPlay monitoring options...but the moinitor becomes scrambled when viewed. 3rd-party is working well and solves the issue. Of course, so would a new MacBook Pro.
